Black pepper is the dried fruit of Piper nigrum, a climbing vine native to the Malabar Coast of India and one of the oldest known spices. The berries are picked before they are fully ripe, dipped in boiling water and dried in the sun for a few days. Its taste is hot and biting, mainly thanks to piperine. In cocktails it is added to taste to season savoury drinks such as the Bloody Mary and the Virgin Mary.
