Fernet-Branca is a Milanese amaro created in 1845 by Bernardino Branca, made from more than thirty roots and herbs, including gentian, chamomile, saffron and rhubarb. After maceration the blends are aged for about a year in large oak vats. The taste is intensely bitter, with mint, liquorice and balsamic notes. 'Fernet' is also a style of dark, minty amari, of which this is the best-known example. In cocktails it is used in small measures, as in the Hanky Panky.
Strength: usually 39% ABV (legal minimum 15%).
Also known as: Fernet, Fernet Branca
