Madeira

Madeira

  • Vermouth & fortified wines
  • Alcoholic

Madeira is the protected-origin fortified wine of the Portuguese island of the same name, fortified with grape spirit. Some is matured in cask for years (canteiro), while some is heated in tanks called estufas, a method born to imitate long tropical voyages in ships' holds. Styles range from dry Sercial to sweet Malmsey, by way of Verdelho and Bual, with notes of dried fruit, caramel and honey and a fresh finish. In cocktails it adds depth and warmth, as in the Baltimore Egg Nogg.

Strength: usually 19% ABV.
