Tawny port

Tawny port

  • Vermouth & fortified wines
  • Alcoholic

Tawny port is a fortified wine from the Port appellation in Portugal's Douro Valley: fermentation is stopped with grape spirit, which leaves it sweet. Unlike ruby, which keeps the colour and fruit of young wine, tawny matures in cask or vat, oxidises slowly and turns from orange-red to amber; there are versions with an indication of age of 10, 20, 30 and 40 years. It shows dried fruit and wood notes, and in the Porto Flip it adds body and sweetness.

Strength: usually 20% ABV (legal minimum 18%).

Also known as: Port, Port wine, Red tawny port, Ruby port
