Water is a true ingredient, because dilution is part of a cocktail's balance: it softens the alcohol and makes the drink more harmonious. Some comes from the ice melting as the drink is shaken or stirred, and some is added on purpose, usually chilled. In an Old Fashioned built with a sugar cube, a splash of water helps dissolve the sugar before the whiskey goes in. It also appears in the Mint Julep and the Canchánchara.
