Cognac is a grape brandy made in the delimited Charentes region of western France, mostly from Ugni Blanc grapes. The wine is distilled twice in copper stills heated over an open flame, then matured for at least two years in oak, which adds colour, tannins and a smoother texture. The taste is aromatic and round, with fruit and wood notes. In cocktails it gives body and warmth to drinks such as the Alexander and the Sidecar.
Strength: usually 40% ABV (legal minimum 40%).
Also known as: Brandy (Cognac), Cognac or brandy

Brandy great swap
The drink stays very close since Cognac is itself a brandy, though a simpler brandy gives less aromatic finesse.
