Smoky rum
- Spirits
- Alcoholic
Smoky rum is not an official category but a descriptive label for a rum, a sugarcane spirit, whose smoky note comes from ageing or finishing in casks that once held peated whisky, or from smoke infused with oak chips. The character is dry and toasty, with hints of cocoa, coffee and spice over the sweetness of the rum. In tiki-style cocktails it adds depth and a touch of smoke, as in the IBA Tiki, where it sits alongside a darker rum.
Strength: usually 40% ABV (legal minimum 37.5%).
Also known as: Havana Club Smoky rum
