- Non-alcoholic
Tonic water is a carbonated soft drink in which quinine, the bitter alkaloid from cinchona bark, is dissolved, sweetened with sugar and often flavoured with citrus. It began as an anti-malarial remedy among the British in India, who added gin to it. It tastes bitter and dry, with a sweetness that varies with the style. It is the base of the Gin and Tonic and also appears in the A.P. Ronik.
