The story
Origins
LegendA story passed down, not confirmed by the sources.
According to a widely repeated story, the Chocolate Martini was born in 1955 in Texas, on the set of the film Giant, created by Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson with vodka, Kahlúa and chocolate syrup. Taylor only told the story in 1987, however, in her diet book, and no document from the intervening years confirms it. In the 1960s some San Franciscans jokingly used the name for the Black Russian, and a 1972 comic strip mocks it. The drink truly took off around the mid-1990s, in the wave of sweet 'Martinis': a 1993 recipe from Max's South Beach in Miami underlies the vodka and crème de cacao version.
