Negroni Sbagliato, aperitif cocktail. Glass: Rocks glass

Negroni Sbagliato

A mistake turned classic.

Campari and sweet vermouth as in a Negroni, but with sparkling wine instead of gin. The result is a lighter, sparkling aperitivo, bittersweet and scented with orange.

The story

Origins

ProbableA plausible account, without definitive proof.

The Sbagliato is tied to Bar Basso in Milan, taken over in 1967 by Mirko Stocchetto, a former bartender at Harry's Bar in Venice. According to the most common account, while making a Negroni a bottle of sparkling wine was grabbed by mistake instead of gin, and the error proved so pleasing that it became a new drink. The date is uncertain: sources give 1968, 1972, the 1970s in general or even the late 1980s, and some say a bartender at the bar invented it while Stocchetto merely saw its potential. The mistake anecdote itself has never been verified. In 2022 a video linked to the series House of the Dragon made it famous worldwide.
