Sweet red vermouth
- Vermouth & fortified wines
- Alcoholic
Sweet red vermouth is a wine aromatised with wormwood and other botanicals, fortified with alcohol and sweetened. The first sweet vermouth was created in Turin in 1786 by Antonio Benedetto Carpano; today it is mostly made from white wines, and its amber or red colour often comes from caramel. It tastes sweet and gently bitter, with herbal and spicy notes. It is a cornerstone of classic mixing, in drinks such as the Adonis, the Affinity and the Americano.
Strength: usually 16% ABV (legal minimum 14.5%).
Also known as: Red vermouth, Rosso vermouth, Sweet vermouth
