Blue curaçao
- Liqueurs
- Alcoholic
Blue curaçao is a bitter-orange liqueur made from citrus peel infused or distilled in neutral spirit, sweetened and then dyed blue with food colouring, usually Brilliant Blue FCF (E133). The name points to the Caribbean island of Curaçao, home of the laraha orange. The taste is sweet, mild orange, often with a touch of vanilla, and its main job is colour. It is used in vivid cocktails such as the Blue Lagoon and the Blue Hawaiian.
Strength: usually 21% ABV (legal minimum 15%).
Also known as: Blue curacao

If you don't have it
-
Orange curaçao great swap
Same base flavour but no blue: the drink loses its colour, which can be restored with a few drops of blue food colouring.
-
Triple sec works
Drier and stronger (around 40%) and colourless: mainly the colour changes, and the drink is less sweet.
