Cola is a sweet carbonated soft drink that originated in the United States in the late nineteenth century. Its name comes from the kola nut, an African seed that contains caffeine; today the main flavourings are citrus oils, cinnamon and vanilla, with acidity often provided by phosphoric acid. It tastes sweet, spiced and slightly tart. In cocktails it lengthens spirits and amari, as in the Cuba Libre, the Fernandito and the Long Island Iced Tea.
