The story
Origins
ProbableA plausible account, without definitive proof.
The name Sea Breeze is older than today's recipe. In 1937 W. J. Tarling's Café Royal Cocktail Book in London listed a Sea Breeze of gin, apricot brandy, grenadine, lemon and soda. The vodka, cranberry and grapefruit version is linked to the campaigns with which the Ocean Spray cooperative promoted cranberry juice after the 1959 cranberry scare, spreading recipe booklets. The earliest known citation of the modern formula dates to March 1965, in a Boston newspaper. From the 1970s the drink became a summer party staple, alongside its cousins the Cape Codder and the Bay Breeze.
