The story
Origins
ProbableA plausible account, without definitive proof.
There are two Tequila Sunrises. The first, according to the Arizona Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix, was supposedly created by Gene Sulit, a bartender there from the 1930s or 1940s, with tequila, crème de cassis, lime and soda. The modern version with orange juice and grenadine is credited to Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice of the Trident restaurant in Sausalito, California, around 1970. Fame came in 1972, when the Trident hosted a party kicking off the Rolling Stones' American tour: the band adopted it, and Keith Richards later recalled that tour as the 'Cocaine and Tequila Sunrise tour'. A recipe on the Jose Cuervo label and the Eagles' 1973 song followed.
