Caipiroska
Lime, vodka, pure freshness.
Lime muddled with sugar, crushed ice and vodka: the Caipiroska is the Caipirinha's sibling, with vodka taking the place of cachaça. Cleaner and more neutral, it puts the lime's sharpness centre stage.

The story
Origins
ProbableA plausible account, without definitive proof.
The Caipiroska began as a variation of the Caipirinha, Brazil's national drink of cachaça, lime and sugar, whose origin is traced to the interior of São Paulo state, by many accounts around 1918. Swapping cachaça for vodka gives a more neutral flavour that lets the lime shine. No records show who first made it, where or when: specialist sources simply present it as the vodka version of the Caipirinha. It is widespread in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina and very popular in Europe too, Italy included. The IBA does not list it as a cocktail in its own right, but names it as an official variant on its Caipirinha page, alongside the rum-based Caipirissima.
