Chartreuse Swizzle, long drink. Glass: Collins glass

Chartreuse Swizzle

Alpine herbs, tropical soul.

Green Chartreuse meets pineapple, lime and falernum in a glass packed with crushed ice. The intense herbal character of the Carthusian liqueur turns fresh and tropical, finished with a spicy hint of nutmeg.

The story

Origins

ProbableA plausible account, without definitive proof.

The Chartreuse Swizzle is a modern classic born in San Francisco from bartender Marcovaldo Dionysos, a devoted fan of the Carthusian liqueur. He created it for a Chartreuse-sponsored cocktail competition he had entered every year since 1999, and this tropical-leaning recipe took first prize. The date varies between sources: Punch and VinePair give 2003, while Difford's Guide says 2002. The drink first appeared on the menu of Harry Denton's Starlight Room, with modest success, and became truly popular from 2008, when it was placed on the opening menu of Clock Bar. From there it spread to bars worldwide and eventually onto the IBA list.
