The story
Origins
LegendA story passed down, not confirmed by the sources.
Several different drinks, alcoholic and alcohol-free, go by the name Florida, and none has a well-documented history. The name points to the American state famous for its citrus. The version chosen here, an alcohol-free mix of grapefruit, orange and lemon juice with sugar and soda, is the one given by Difford's Guide, a drink designed for those skipping alcohol. According to a French source, the first known Florida appears in 1922 in Robert Vermeire's Cocktails: How to Mix Them, but that was a different mix of citrus juice, Angostura and syrup. No direct link between that recipe and the modern one has been shown.
